Lake County, IN Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Lake County handles weeds and tall grass through Public Works, which is charged to 'receive concerns from the public about... woody vegetation, weeds, tall grass and unsafe building demolition' on unincorporated property, assigning each complaint a case number. There is no county-wide fixed height inch limit; instead the county abates overgrowth as a nuisance. Statewide, IC 15-16-8 empowers county weed control boards to require control of detrimental and noxious weeds. Because Lake County is heavily incorporated, most residents fall under a city or town grass ordinance, such as Hammond's 6-inch and neighboring Indiana limits around 8-12 inches.
