Indiana law makes property owners destroy detrimental plants. IC 15-16-8-1 lists Canada thistle, Johnson grass, Columbus grass, bur cucumber, and shattercane, plus noxious weeds and rank vegetation in residential areas. Local weed ordinances under IC 36-7-10.1 add height-based rank-vegetation limits.
Indiana runs two overlapping weed systems. First, IC 15-16-8 defines detrimental plants statewide and requires every owner to destroy them; township trustees and the county weed control board can abate and bill the owner. Second, IC 36-7-10.1 lets Lake County and its cities adopt rank-vegetation ordinances setting a maximum grass and weed height for developed and residential lots. In practice, unincorporated complaints go to the Lake County Health Department or Plan Commission, while incorporated addresses are enforced by the city or town code office.
Township trustee or weed board mows the parcel and files a certified statement with the county auditor; the cost is placed on the tax duplicate and collected as delinquent taxes (IC 15-16-8-7).
