All of Marion County outside city limits is a weed control district. Landowners must destroy designated noxious weeds and stop them from seeding. Inside the Salem-Keizer growth boundary, overgrown weeds and grasses over 10 inches are separately abatable as nuisance vegetation.
Two Marion County programs cover weeds. In the rural county, the Weed Control District ordinance (MCC Chapter 8.20, Ord. 1225) declares all land outside a city a district for destroying and preventing the spread of noxious weeds; a weed inspector can serve notice requiring destruction within 2 to 20 days. Every owner must destroy or prevent the seeding of any board-listed noxious weed using the most efficient practical means, and no noxious weed may be allowed to produce seed. Inside the Salem-Keizer urban growth boundary, the Nuisance Vegetation ordinance (Chapter 8.15) instead targets weeds and grasses over 10 inches. Cities run their own overgrown-lot programs.
