Plainfield, NJ Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Weed and overgrown vegetation enforcement in Union County is authorized under N.J.S.A. 40:48-2.13 (municipal abatement with lien recovery) and N.J.S.A. 40:48-2.14 (county co-enforcement). Elizabeth Revised Ordinances Chapter 6.08 sets a 10-inch maximum grass/weed height, requires removal of noxious weeds listed under N.J.A.C. 2:24, and authorizes the Division of Neighborhood Services to issue 10-day notices before abatement. Costs are recovered through property tax liens. Plainfield Code Chapter 10 (Property Maintenance) similarly enforces at 10 inches with weekly inspections of vacant lots. Linden aggressively enforces on industrial parcels along the Turnpike corridor and Bayway. Summit, Westfield, and Cranford enforce primarily complaint-driven.
