Plainfield, NJ Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Plainfield's blocked-driveway rule sits in Chapter 10, Article 6 (Offenses Against Property), § 10:6-1. Subsection (a) bars any person from parking a vehicle or placing an obstruction in front of and upon any private property, driveway or right-of-way without the permission of the lawful owner, tenant or occupant. Under subsection (b), the Police Division removes and impounds the vehicle as provided by law, and upon conviction the cost of removal and storage is added to the other lawful costs the Municipal Court Judge imposes on the defendant. The section's cross reference points to Chapter 16, Articles 4, 12 and 16 through 24 for other parking offenses.

Chapter 16, Article 4 governs the posted street rules. Section 16:4-2 bars parking at any time, except by permit or as an authorized vehicle, on the streets listed in Schedule I. Section 16:4-3 bars parking during the hours in Schedule II, except public holidays and by permit. Section 16:4-4 bars stopping or standing during the hours in Schedule III on any day except Sundays and public holidays, and § 16:4-5 enforces the time limits in Schedules IV A, IV B and IV C on any day except Sundays and public holidays. The streets and hours themselves sit in the Chapter 16A schedules. Under § 16:4-5A, when the Director of the Department of Public Works and Urban Development declares a snow emergency, no one parks on the streets in Schedule II A.

Article 12 adds two on-street rules. Section 16:12-1 prohibits angle parking on any street except the streets designated in Schedule XVI, at the angle designated. Section 16:12-2 bars parking on a street to display a vehicle or its contents for sale, or to repair a vehicle except when necessitated by an emergency. Section 16:4-1 adds that the time limits do not relieve anyone of more restrictive stopping, standing or parking rules under N.J.S.A. 39:4-138 or other New Jersey statutes.
