Plainfield, NJ Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

The rule has three parts: when, where and what. On timing, the ban runs all day Sunday and, on any other day of the week, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. On distance, it applies to work within one thousand (1,000) feet of any dwelling or business property in the City of Plainfield. On activity, it covers operating and using tools or equipment in conducting any excavation, demolition, erection, alteration, repair or other construction, but only where the work makes any loud or disturbing noise. The trigger is the noise, so the text bars loud tools in the barred window rather than all presence on a job site.

There is one emergency exception. Work in case of urgent necessity in the interest of public safety is allowed, and then only upon obtaining a permit from the Department of Public Works. A contractor cannot claim urgency without that permit.

Subsection (g) carves out a Sunday exception for a narrow class of builders. Construction of a house of worship, education facility, library or similar building by a nonprofit religious, educational or other eleemosynary institution is not prohibited on Sunday when the work is performed by members of the institution, without compensation, and is carried on between 12:00 noon and 6:00 p.m. A paid contractor does not qualify.

The rule sits in § 10:8-3, Regulating and prohibiting unnecessary and disturbing noises, which also bars willfully making loud, boisterous or unseemly noise to the annoyance of another person under subsection (a). Article 8 prints no penalty of its own for subsection (f), so the general penalty in § 1:1-14 applies.
