Amherst, NY Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Sections 186-4, 186-5, and 186-6 of Chapter 186, Vehicles and Traffic, were each amended April 1, 2019, by Local Law No. 9-2019 to add bike lanes to their coverage. Section 186-4, No parking anytime, bars parking a vehicle on any bike lane or on any street posted as a 'No Parking' area in the Highway Superintendent's Inventory of Traffic Control Devices. Section 186-5, No standing anytime, and § 186-6, No stopping anytime, use identical language to bar standing and stopping a vehicle on a bike lane or posted 'No Standing'/'No Stopping' street.

Because the bike lane restriction is written directly into the statute rather than tied to signage, it applies to every designated bike lane Town-wide without requiring a posted sign at that location. Section 186-2 defines 'park' as leaving a vehicle unattended longer than needed to load or unload, and 'stand' as occupying a stopped, attended vehicle longer than that, except when avoiding a traffic conflict or complying with an officer's direction or a signal.
