Amherst, NY Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Section 7-1-11 requires loading and unloading facilities to be provided and maintained for as long as a building is occupied. Those spaces cannot double as required parking or stacking spaces, and a loading space cannot be used to repair or service vehicles. Section 7-1-11(B) requires a loading space to be arranged for access without blocking driveways, parking, stacking areas, public streets or sidewalks, and bars a required loading space from facing or being visible from the frontage street or sitting in a front yard, or in a side or rear yard that adjoins a residential district.

Each space needs a minimum size of 12 feet wide by 20 feet long, exclusive of maneuvering room, with 14 feet of vertical clearance. The schedule in § 7-1-11(E) scales the number of required spaces to use and floor area: retail under 5,000 square feet needs none, 5,000 to 50,000 square feet needs one space, and 50,000 to 100,000 square feet needs two, with one more for every additional 100,000 square feet; printing, warehouse and storage buildings need two spaces under 40,000 square feet and four up to 100,000; industrial uses need two spaces under 20,000 square feet and four up to 40,000. Uses not listed in the schedule may provide any number of spaces as long as they meet the same design standards under § 7-1-11(F).
