Walton County, GA Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

I of the Walton County Land Development Ordinance is the county's design standard for bicycle lanes built as part of new development. Where bicycle lanes are required, they must be a minimum of four feet in width and located between the outside travel lane of a roadway and the curb or shoulder. When on-street parking is permitted along that street, the bicycle lane instead sits between the parking lane and the outer lane of moving vehicles, keeping cyclists out of the door zone created by parked cars.

Lanes must be delineated with pavement markings that meet the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standard, and every bikeway and bicycle lane must receive pre-approval from the Planning and Development Department before construction. This bicycle-lane standard sits inside the broader sidewalks and bikeway section of Article 9, which also requires sidewalks along the frontage of non-residential developments, along developments within a half-mile of any public school, and along interior streets of residential developments on lots under one acre. Because bike lanes in unincorporated Walton County are a design element tied to the development-permit process rather than a stand-alone traffic ordinance, obstruction or riding-rule questions for existing streets in the unincorporated county fall to whichever agency maintains the road, with the Sheriff's Office handling traffic enforcement on public rights-of-way and the Planning and Development Department controlling how new lanes are engineered and approved for future roads.
