Tuscaloosa, AL Mobility & Curb Rules: TNC Pickup Zones (2026)

The pick-up and drop-off requirement sits inside Sec. 25-123's "Large parking lots" standards, which apply only to parking lots containing two hundred or more spaces; smaller developments are not subject to this standard at all. Within that subsection, item 3 states the rule in full: "The parking lot shall include designated areas for pick-up and drop-off by visitors, taxis, or other mobility service providers. " The same large-lot subsection also requires a primary drive aisle designed as an extension of the public street network, with two travel lanes and street trees spaced no more than 50 feet apart, and requires pedestrian pathways at least every six parallel parking rows or every 200 feet, whichever is shorter, so the pick-up/drop-off standard is one piece of a broader large-lot circulation package under Article VI, Division 2, Off-Street Parking, Bicycle Parking, and Loading Standards.

Because the rule is triggered purely by lot size, a 200-plus-space shopping center, hospital, or university-adjacent parking structure has to plan for a dedicated curb or bay for taxis and services such as ride-hailing pickups, but a small retail lot with 40 spaces has no comparable obligation under this section. The standard was adopted with the citywide Unified Development Ordinance rewrite, Ord. No. 9572, Sec. 2, effective December 17, 2024.
