Southfield, MI Noise from Specific Sources: Delivery Truck Noise (2026)

Southfield City Code Sec. 9.11(5), captioned Handling merchandise, is one of the twelve specific offenses listed under Sec. 9.11 that implement the general nuisance declaration in Sec. 9.10. It makes unlawful the creation of a loud and excessive noise in connection with loading or unloading any vehicle or the opening and destruction of bales, boxes, crates and containers, language that covers delivery trucks, freight docks and retail stockroom activity where pallets, crates or bales are broken down noisily. The subsection sets no separate curfew of its own, so the noise is judged against the loud-and-excessive standard directly, and against the general repose standard of Sec.

9.10 that treats noise offending the peace and quiet of persons of ordinary sensibilities as a nuisance. Sec. 9.11 is designated a municipal civil infraction by Sec. 1.704, and the general nuisance abatement mechanism in Sec. 9.2 allows the city to seek a court order restraining continued violations in addition to a civil fine. Complaints are directed to the Southfield Police Department, which carries general enforcement responsibility for the Code under Sec. 1.18.
