Broward County is hurricane-prone, so standby and portable generators are common in residential and commercial properties. Section 27-235 imposes the standard 55 dBA (L50) / 65 dBA (Lmax) residential receiving-property limit on generators. Diesel and gasoline generators typically range from 65-85 dBA at 23 feet and can easily exceed the property-line threshold if installed too close to a neighbor's home. The Florida Building Code requires permanent standby generators to be anchored per HVHZ 170 mph wind-load standards and placed outside flood hazard elevation. Section 27-236 exempts emergency generators during declared emergencies (typically hurricanes or grid failure), allowing continuous operation when utility power is unavailable. Non-emergency weekly test runs should be limited to daytime hours and configured with acoustic enclosures if within 10 feet of a property line. FL 553.886 addresses natural gas generator installations. For portable generator use after storms, keep units at least 20 feet from windows to prevent carbon monoxide intake and distance from neighboring bedrooms to manage noise.
Non-criminal citation under 27-241: $50-$250 first offense, $100-$500 repeat. Emergency operation during a declared emergency is exempt under 27-236.
