Construction hours in Lorain County, OH — sometimes called construction noise rules or contractor work-hour ordinances — set when contractors can run power tools, hammers, and heavy equipment.
In the City of Lorain, powered construction equipment such as pile drivers, hammers and rollers may not operate between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. or on Sundays and holidays without a special permit. Elyria restricts construction tools between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
Construction-hour limits are set by each city, not by Lorain County. Lorain's noise-control chapter makes it unlawful to use fuel- or electric-powered mechanical apparatus in building or construction operations between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. or on Sundays and holidays, except for emergencies or by special permit from the Director. Elyria separately bars construction, drilling or demolition tools (other than domestic power tools) between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. when they create a noise disturbance across a residential boundary, except for utility emergency work or by permit from the Safety-Service Director. Townships may set their own limits under ORC Chapter 505.
Lorain noise-control violations are third-degree misdemeanors. Elyria treats construction noise disturbances as minor to fourth-degree misdemeanors, with each day a separate offense.
