Full Breakdown

Under § 182-4E, the erection, excavation, demolition, alteration, or repair of any building in Schenectady is unlawful outside the window of 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Off-hours work needs a permit from the City Engineer, granted only in cases of urgent necessity in the interest of public safety, and renewable for three days or less while the emergency continues. A companion clause, § 182-4M, separately bars construction tools, machinery, and heavy equipment, grinding, hammering, sawing, between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. whenever that noise can be heard inside any residence. Code enforcement and city police field complaints.

Violations & Fines

Building, demolition, or excavation work outside 6:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. without a City Engineer emergency permit violates § 182-4E; nighttime construction-tool noise audible inside a residence violates § 182-4M, both prosecuted as Chapter 182 noise offenses.
