Construction hours in Sutter County, CA — sometimes called construction noise rules or contractor work-hour ordinances — set when contractors can run power tools, hammers, and heavy equipment.
Construction noise near homes and other sensitive uses is exempt from Sutter County noise limits only between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Construction is prohibited on Sundays and legal holidays without County permission.
Under Sutter County Zoning Code Sec. 1500-21.5-070(B), noise from construction, repair, remodeling, demolition, paving or grading within 1,000 feet of noise-sensitive uses (residences, daycares, schools, convalescent homes, medical facilities) is exempt from the Article 21.5 exterior noise standards only when performed 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays or 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Construction is prohibited on Sundays and legal holidays unless permission has been applied for and granted by the County. Work outside these windows must comply with the exterior noise standards (55 dBA day / 45 dBA night hourly Leq at noise-sensitive receiving properties). Emergency work to protect or restore safe conditions, including utility restoration, is separately exempt under Sec. 1500-21.5-070(C).
Construction noise outside the exempt hours that exceeds the exterior noise standards is an infraction and a public nuisance (Sec. 1500-21.5-090). The County serves written notice requiring corrective action and may pursue enforcement under Zoning Code Article 26, including summary abatement of the noise source.
