"Decibel" (dBA) is defined as A-weighted sound perceptible to the human ear. These figures are guidance the enforcing officer considers alongside factors like duration, time, and whether the sound is heard beyond 80 feet from a property line or 100 feet from a vehicle. Importantly, §509.08(d)(3) provides that a sound-level meter may be used for the determination but is not required for a citation — the standard is ultimately whether the sound is an unreasonable nuisance.
Exceeding levels supports a noise-nuisance citation: warning, then minor misdemeanor, escalating to a 4th-degree misdemeanor with fines up to $250 for repeat offenses.
