The county caps noise crossing a property line at 70 dB (7 a.m.-10 p.m.) and 60 dB (10 p.m.-7 a.m.). Measurements use A-weighting, slow response, on an ANSI Type 1 or Type 2 meter placed at the property line.
Greenville County uses objective decibel limits. Sec. 15-102 sets 70 dB daytime and 60 dB overnight at the complaining party's exterior property line. Sec. 15-101 governs measurement: readings use the peak intensity in decibels, the "A" frequency weighting, and the "slow" response of a meter conforming to ANSI standard S1.4 (Type 1 or Type 2). The microphone is placed at the property line, at least 5 feet from any wall and at least 3 feet above the ground; a 5 dB variance applies if 5-foot spacing is impossible. For multifamily dwellings the separating walls count as the property line. The ordinance also preserves common-law nuisance findings without requiring meter readings.
Exceeding the limits is a misdemeanor within magistrate's court jurisdiction after an offender fails to abate; each day is a separate offense (Sec. 15-105).
