The City of Maricopa restricts outdoor speakers under MCC 18.110.050: a speaker may not be audible more than 50 feet from the source or be within 250 feet of a residential district, except for business intercom systems used 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Outdoor music for approved special events requires a temporary use permit.
Outdoor amplified sound in Maricopa is regulated by MCC 18.110.050(B)(5), which prohibits maintaining or operating an outdoor speaker affixed to a structure or placed on property where the speaker is audible more than 50 feet from the source, or where the speaker is 250 feet or closer to a residential district. An exception applies to intercommunication systems used only from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. solely for conducting the internal business affairs of the establishment. The ordinance does not prohibit an outdoor speaker where a temporary use permit has been granted for a special event. The chapter also exempts parades, concerts, festivals, fairs and similar activities approved by the city for a temporary use permit, and athletic, musical or cultural events conducted by or under the auspices of public or private schools, colleges and universities. General amplified-music limits (excessive, plainly audible beyond the property line, especially after 10:00 p.m.) still apply to outdoor sound, and the public-peace ordinance MCC 9.20.010 backstops these provisions by treating loud, offensive outdoor music as a public nuisance. The city manager or designee may grant a temporary noise exemption of up to 30 days for special circumstances.
An outdoor speaker exceeding the 50-foot audibility or 250-foot residential setback can be cited under MCC 18.110.050. Hosting an amplified outdoor event without a required temporary use permit, or in violation of the noise standard, can lead to Code Enforcement action.
