Quiet hours in Sedgwick County, KS โ also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time โ define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Sedgwick County has no countywide noise ordinance setting fixed quiet hours in unincorporated areas. As of a May 2025 staff report, commissioners were still weighing whether to adopt one. Statewide disorderly-conduct law (K.S.A. 21-6203) still reaches noise that disturbs others.
Unlike its incorporated cities, unincorporated Sedgwick County does not have a general noise resolution that prohibits loud noise during set nighttime hours. County staff told commissioners in May 2025 there is currently no countywide rule and outlined two possible future approaches: a decibel-based standard measured at a set distance, or a reasonableness standard prohibiting unusual or excessive noise. Neither has been adopted. In the meantime, Kansas disorderly-conduct law applies statewide, and the sheriff can act on noisy conduct that reasonably alarms or disturbs others. If your address is inside Wichita or another city, that city's noise code governs instead.
No county quiet-hours penalty exists. State disorderly conduct (K.S.A. 21-6203) is a class C misdemeanor; contact the Sheriff for disturbances.
