Quiet hours in Raleigh, NC β also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time β define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Raleigh's 2024 noise overhaul (Ordinance 2024-586) uses a reasonable-person standard with defined daytime (7 AM-11 PM) and nighttime (11 PM-7 AM) periods. Amplified sound plainly audible at 50 ft at night or 300 ft by day can be a violation. A 2025 amendment added decibel-level limits for commercial amplified sound effective Jan 1, 2026.
City Code Part 12, Ch. 5 (Sec. 12-5001 et seq.) prohibits plainly audible unreasonable noise. Nighttime period runs 11 PM to 7 AM. Amplified sound from commercial establishments regulated separately with Glenwood South Hospitality District receiving more permissive limits. DECIBEL Permit available for businesses outside the hospitality district. Two noise violations within 12 months triggers $1,500 penalty for subsequent violations. Civil penalty: $250 first offense, $500 subsequent within 12 months. Criminal misdemeanor fine up to $500. Each day may constitute a separate offense. Commercial amplified sound: $1,500 after two violations in 12 months.
