San Joaquin County, CA Noise Ordinances: Quiet Hours (2026)

This is a campground rule, not a countywide residential noise curfew. Section 2-8011(m) sits inside the county's camping regulations and applies in an area designated for overnight camping in a San Joaquin County park. A neighbor's late party in a subdivision is not what this subsection addresses; a stereo two sites over at a county park is.

The subsection contains two distinct prohibitions, and they are not the same test. The first is behavioral: between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily, no person may conduct themselves in a manner that disturbs others in the camping area. That one turns on whether other campers are actually disturbed. The second is a boundary rule about equipment: no person shall use any device or equipment at a volume which emits sound beyond the immediate individual camping or picnic site. That test is spatial rather than subjective. If the sound crosses the edge of your own site, the volume is too high, whether or not a specific person complains about it.

The only way around the equipment limit is specific written permission of the Park Administrator. A verbal go-ahead from a passing staff member is not what the subsection describes, and the permission has to be specific rather than a general blessing.

Generators carry their own separate window. Engine-driven generators may run only between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., which is tighter on both ends than the 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. quiet-hours window. A camper who assumes generator use is fine until 10:00 p.m. is off by two hours: the generator has to be shut down at 8:00 p.m. even though general quiet hours have not started.

Read together, a San Joaquin County park campsite has three time markers to track in the evening. Generators stop at 8:00 p.m., quiet hours begin at 10:00 p.m., and the restriction lifts at 6:00 a.m. The sound-beyond-your-site limit applies during the quiet-hours window.
