Idaho law requires every motor vehicle to have a working muffler and bans modified exhaust that increases noise above the factory muffler. Ada County's noise ordinance also lists automobiles among nighttime noise sources.
Statewide Idaho Code 49-937 requires every motor vehicle to be equipped with a muffler in good working order to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and prohibits cut-outs, bypasses or exhaust modifications that amplify noise above the original manufacturer's muffler. It applies everywhere in Ada County, incorporated or not, and is enforced by the Sheriff and Idaho State Police. Locally, Ada County Code 5-13-3 also names 'automobile' as a possible source of unlawful loud or unusual noise between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM.
Muffler/exhaust violations of I.C. 49-937 are enforced as traffic infractions. Nighttime vehicle noise can also be a county misdemeanor under 5-13-5.
