In the City of Lorain, idling a motor vehicle over 8,000 pounds for more than two minutes between 9:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. (or on Sundays/holidays) that raises neighborhood noise by more than six decibels is unlawful. Elyria bars racing engines and 'peeling.'
Vehicle-noise rules are municipal. Lorain's noise-control chapter makes it unlawful to run the motor of a vehicle over four tons (8,000 pounds) for more than two consecutive minutes between 9:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., or on Sundays and holidays, where that raises the neighborhood noise level by more than six decibels; buses at terminals are exempt. Elyria's code separately prohibits operating a vehicle so out of repair or loaded that it creates loud grating, grinding or rattling noise, and bans unnecessary engine racing, squealing tires and 'peeling.' Statewide, ORC 4513.22 requires a working muffler. The county does not enforce these inside cities.
Lorain noise-control violations are third-degree misdemeanors. Elyria vehicle-noise violations range from minor to fourth-degree misdemeanors, and offending vehicles may be towed.
