A booming car stereo can additionally be treated as unreasonable noise under Penal Code Sec. 42.01(a)(5). Inside city limits, municipal noise and cruising ordinances may add further limits, but the muffler requirement applies countywide regardless of jurisdiction.
A muffler-cutout or defective-muffler violation under Sec. 547.604 is a misdemeanor traffic offense with a fine up to $200. A separate loud-stereo disorderly-conduct charge under Penal Code Sec. 42.01 is a Class C misdemeanor with a fine up to $500.
