Full Breakdown

Under Sec. 34.087, it's unlawful to operate a car radio, stereo receiver, CD player, cassette player, or similar device so it's audible in a public place or on someone else's property from 30 feet or more away, or so it causes vibration felt at 30 feet or more. Businesses using sound equipment in vehicles during normal operations between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. have a defense to prosecution. Separately, Sec. 82.102 bans unmuffled compression-release engine brakes (Jake brakes) unless muffled to prevent noise louder than normal engine operation, with signs posted at city entrances.

Violations & Fines

Violating the vehicle stereo noise limit is a Class C misdemeanor citation; excessive residential noise violations under the same division carry fines up to $500.00.
