Vehicle audio equipment audible more than 50 feet away in any public street, park or parking lot is unlawful in unincorporated Sutter County. State law adds parallel rules on car stereos, mufflers and modified exhaust enforced by the CHP and Sheriff.
Sutter County Zoning Code Sec. 1500-21.5-060(B) prohibits operating audio equipment in a vehicle on or within any public street, public park, public parking lot or other public place where it is audible to a person of normal hearing sensitivity more than 50 feet from the vehicle. California law applies the same standard statewide: Vehicle Code Sec. 27007 bars operating sound amplification systems audible 50 or more feet from a vehicle on a highway (with exemptions for emergency vehicles and authorized events). Vehicle Code Sec. 27150 requires every motor vehicle to be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and Sec. 27151 prohibits exhaust modifications that amplify noise, with passenger vehicles limited to 95 dBA under the applicable test standard.
County violations are infractions and public nuisances under Zoning Code Sec. 1500-21.5-090, and the offending sound equipment may be summarily abated or confiscated. Vehicle Code violations (Secs. 27007, 27150, 27151) are citable traffic infractions enforced by the Sheriff and CHP.
