Temple, TX Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Temple's noise chapter requires every vehicle on a city roadway to run a muffler in efficient, actual working condition and bans exhaust cut-outs that bypass it (Sec. 24-13). A separate provision makes it unlawful to run any vehicle so out of repair or loaded as to create loud grating, grinding or rattling noise (Sec. 24-10), and bars unnecessary or prolonged horn use (Sec. 24-12). On top of the noise chapter, Temple's traffic code bans engine brakes or retarders on any street in the city, state roads included, except for fire trucks on emergency calls (Sec. 37-55). Violations carry a fine up to $500 under the Code's general penalty provision.
