Gas and propane grills are allowed at homes year-round, including during Stage 1 and Stage 2 fire restrictions. Charcoal grills are allowed when supervised by a responsible adult 18 or older, even under fire restrictions.
Douglas County treats gas- and liquid-fueled cooking appliances as low-risk. Under both Stage 1 and Stage 2 fire restrictions the County allows "fires within liquid-fueled or gas-fueled stoves, grills, fire pits or other gas or liquid fueled appliance," so propane and natural-gas BBQs stay legal even when wood and open fires are banned. Charcoal grills are also allowed when supervised: Stage 2 permits "residential use of charcoal grill fires when such use is supervised by a responsible party at least 18 years of age." Store propane cylinders outdoors and upright, keep grills away from structures and combustible decks, and never leave a lit grill unattended. Town codes (Castle Rock, Parker) may add multifamily-balcony grill limits.
Misusing a grill during a ban (e.g., unattended charcoal) can be cited as a Class 2 Petty Offense, up to $1,000 fine plus $10 surcharge.
