Backyard gas, charcoal, and propane grills are allowed and need no burn permit. Only UL-approved barbeque devices may be used on combustible decks, and they must sit at least 36 inches from combustibles. Charcoal grilling stays legal during most fire restrictions if supervised by an adult.
Castle Rock exempts backyard residential cooking fires fueled by gas or charcoal in a manufactured device from the open-burn permit. Per the burn rules, 'with the exception of U.L. approved barbeque devices, no other burning device shall be used on a combustible deck or patio,' and 'U.L. approved barbeque devices shall not be placed closer than 36 inches from combustibles.' For multi-family buildings, grills may not be used on balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Under Stage 2 fire restrictions, gas and liquid-fueled grills are allowed, and 'residential use of charcoal grill fires' is permitted when supervised by a responsible party at least 18 years old.
Grilling in prohibited locations or during a total ban is a fire code violation; Stage 2 violations carry up to $1,000, 180 days jail, or both.
