Buena Park follows the 2022 California Fire Code for outdoor cooking, enforced by the Orange County Fire Authority. Single-family homes can use charcoal and gas grills freely. At apartments and condos, open-flame grills may not be used on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction, with limited exceptions.
Buena Park has no special barbecue ordinance; grilling is governed by California Fire Code Section 308 (open-flame and cooking devices), adopted in Title 16 of the Municipal Code and enforced by the Orange County Fire Authority. For detached one- and two-family dwellings (single-family homes and duplexes), there is no fire-code restriction on using charcoal or propane grills in the backyard; owners simply keep the grill a safe distance from the house, fences and combustibles and never leave it unattended. The significant restriction applies to multifamily buildings: under Section 308.1.4, charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices may not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Exceptions include one- and two-family dwellings; buildings, balconies and decks protected by an automatic sprinkler system; and LP-gas cooking devices with an LP-gas container of not more than 2.5 pounds water capacity (a small camp-style canister). In practice this means apartment and condominium residents generally may not use a full-size charcoal or 20-pound-propane grill on a wood balcony, while a small tabletop canister device or a grill used in a designated common area away from the building may be allowed. LP-gas storage tied to grilling follows California Fire Code Chapter 61 / NFPA 58, so spare propane cylinders should be kept outdoors and not inside dwellings or basements. Property managers may impose stricter house rules than the code minimum.
Operating a prohibited open-flame grill on a combustible apartment balcony or within 10 feet of combustible construction is a fire-code violation under Section 308.1.4, enforceable by OCFA; the fire code official can order the device removed or its use stopped and issue citations under the adopted Municipal Code.
