In Camden County, charcoal and propane grills cannot be used or stored on combustible balconies or decks, or within 5 feet of a multifamily building, under the NJ Fire Code. Detached one- and two-family homes are exempt.
New Jersey's Uniform Fire Code (IFC Section 308) restricts open-flame cooking near buildings. Charcoal burners, LP-gas grills, and outdoor fireplaces may not be operated or stored on combustible balconies or decks, or within 5 feet of combustible construction of an apartment or condo building. This protects multifamily residents. The rule does NOT apply to detached one- and two-family dwellings or sprinklered buildings, so most single-family backyard grilling is unrestricted. Camden County sets no separate grilling ordinance; municipal fire officials enforce the code. In county parks, grills are allowed in designated areas but bonfires and campfires need a permit.
Grilling on an apartment balcony against the code can bring a fire-code notice of violation from the municipal fire official; property managers may also prohibit it under lease terms.
