Chapter 21 (Regulation of Trees) requires a Tree Removal Permit for any work that destroys, cuts, removes, or trims more than 30% of any tree with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 5 inches or greater.
Even healthy or poor-condition trees, and dead trees over 5 inches DBH, fall under permit jurisdiction. Light pruning of small branches is allowed without a permit. Permits are issued by Public Works (1 Perina Boulevard, (856) 488-7867; trees@chnj.gov) with a 7 business-day review window and possible site inspection.
Removal or excessive pruning without a permit can result in replacement-tree requirements or contribution to the Tree Fund of $175 per tree.
