Cherry Hill, NJ Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

2, adopted by Ordinance No. 81-58 in 1981, requires smoke detectors in all hotels and multiple dwellings, listed by Underwriters' Laboratories, Factory Mutual, or another nationally recognized testing laboratory as ionization or photoelectric units. 3 sets performance specs for those units, including an integral alarm rated at a minimum of eighty-five decibels at ten feet. 4 requires AC power on a constantly active circuit, but allows battery-powered single-station units if the owner inspects, cleans and replaces batteries annually, tags each unit with inspection dates, supplies occupants with manufacturer testing instructions, and performs monthly testing for any occupant unable to do so.

5 requires at least one detector in close proximity to each sleeping area, positioned no more than ten feet from the sleeping area's exit door, and photoelectric only if within five feet of a kitchen or bathroom; a basement or cellar connected to the unit needs its own detector at the highest ceiling point or the first-floor stair landing. 6 makes every occupant responsible for testing detectors in their own unit monthly and reporting malfunctions to the owner. 7 requires interconnected multiple-station detection in common areas, corridors, stairways and basements of buildings that do not meet the Uniform Construction Code's minimum life-safety requirements.
