Residential barbecuing in Lake Elsinore is allowed and regulated through the California Fire Code adopted in Chapter 15.56. Charcoal and propane grills must be kept clear of combustibles and generally may not be used on multifamily balconies. Small barbecue cylinders are permitted; grilling can be restricted in high fire danger.
Lake Elsinore adopts the California Fire Code (2022 edition) in Chapter 15.56, which governs outdoor cooking and LP-gas. Backyard barbecuing with charcoal or propane is allowed at single-family homes, kept clear of structures, fences, and vegetation, and supervised while lit. Under California Fire Code Section 308, open-flame and charcoal cooking devices generally may not operate on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at apartments and condominiums unless fully sprinklered; one- and two-family homes are exempt. Barbecue propane cylinders fall under Chapter 61 limits and must not be stored indoors. Because the city has High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, the Fire Marshal may restrict grilling during red-flag warnings.
Using a charcoal or open-flame grill on a combustible multifamily balcony, grilling too close to structures or vegetation, or burning prohibited materials violates the California Fire Code (LEMC 15.56) and AQMD rules. The Fire Marshal may order the device removed.
