Las Vegas adopts the International Fire Code (IFC) Section 308 prohibiting open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction in multi-family buildings (R-2 occupancies). Single-family yards are largely unregulated. The Clark County Fire Department and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue enforce. Exceptions exist for buildings with full sprinkler systems.
Las Vegas Fire & Rescue enforces the International Fire Code (IFC) as locally amended. IFC Section 308.1.4 prohibits charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices from being operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction in apartments, condos, and other R-2 multi-family buildings. The same restriction extends to LP-gas containers larger than 1 pound. Exceptions: (1) one- and two-family dwellings; (2) buildings with an automatic sprinkler system throughout. This means most Las Vegas apartments and condos may not have propane or charcoal grills on balconies, while sprinklered high-rises sometimes permit them. Electric grills are generally allowed. Single-family homeowners may use propane and charcoal grills in yards subject only to nuisance smoke complaints and HOA rules. During red-flag fire-weather warnings β common during dry, windy spring months β Clark County may impose temporary outdoor burning restrictions. LP-gas cylinders must be stored upright, outdoors, and away from ignition sources. Stored cylinders larger than 5 lb water capacity inside buildings are prohibited.
Operating prohibited grill on multi-family balcony: fire code citation, immediate removal, possible eviction under lease. LP-gas storage violations: fines and confiscation. Fire-caused damages: civil liability.
