North Las Vegas Fire Department enforces the locally adopted International Fire Code through NLVMC Title 13. IFC Section 308.1.4 prohibits charcoal burners, open-flame cooking devices, and LP-gas containers exceeding 1 pound water capacity on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at apartments, condominiums, and other R-2 multi-family residences. Exceptions apply where: (1) the building is one- or two-family detached; (2) the building, balcony, or deck is protected by an automatic sprinkler system throughout per NFPA 13 or 13R; or (3) the appliance is electric. The 10-foot clearance rule means most North Las Vegas apartment balconies cannot host propane or charcoal grills; electric grills are typically allowed. Single-family detached homeowners may use propane, natural-gas, and charcoal grills in their backyards subject only to general nuisance smoke complaints and HOA rules. During declared red-flag fire-weather warnings β common during dry spring months β Clark County and the North Las Vegas Fire Department may impose temporary outdoor burning restrictions. LP-gas cylinders must be stored upright, outdoors, and away from ignition sources; cylinders larger than 5 pounds water capacity stored inside buildings are prohibited under IFC Chapter 61. Construction on the Apex Industrial Park north of the city is subject to additional fire-code restrictions.
Operating a prohibited grill on a multi-family balcony: fire code citation under NLVMC Title 13, immediate removal order, possible eviction under lease terms. LP-gas storage violations: fines and confiscation. Fire-caused damages: civil liability under Nevada negligence law. Burn-ban violations carry enhanced penalties.
