North Las Vegas does not mandate a specific fence material citywide; the code focuses on height, setback, and safety. Concrete masonry unit (CMU) block is by far the most common material because it handles desert heat, wind, and UV exposure, and matches existing subdivision perimeter walls. Stucco-over-block, split-face block, and precision block are all acceptable finishes. Wrought iron and tubular steel are allowed, especially along golf courses and open-space edges in Aliante. Wood fencing (cedar, redwood) is permitted but weathers quickly in desert sun; pressure-treated pine is not recommended. Vinyl fencing is permitted and HOA-approved in most subdivisions. Chain link is allowed in residential rear yards but is generally prohibited in front yards by HOA CCRs, even though city code permits it. Prohibited residential materials include barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fencing (NLVMC Title 17), and fences constructed of pallets, tarps, corrugated metal scrap, or similar temporary materials are considered nuisances subject to code enforcement. Master-planned HOAs typically require matching wall color palettes.
