Stedman, NC Outdoor Cooking: Smoker Rules (2026)

04(H), titled 'Fires and Grills,' is the only open-flame cooking rule in Stedman's code, and it is written for town park property rather than private yards. Its first sentence makes it unlawful for any person to make a fire in any park except in a park grill, so cooking over an open flame at Stedman Ernest Freeman Park is confined to the fixed grills the town has installed. Anyone who wants to bring a personal grill into the park instead needs advance permission from the town; the ordinance does not set a fee or a written-application process for that permission, so a resident should check with Town Hall before hauling in a charcoal or propane grill for a picnic or reunion.

The section closes with two duties once a fire is going: it is unlawful to leave any grill unattended, and it is equally unlawful to fail to completely extinguish a fire and all the embers before leaving. Both duties apply whether the grill is a town park grill or a personal one brought in with permission. 07, instead adopts the North Carolina State Fire Prevention Code, including its open-burning permit provisions, by reference for everything outside the parks. 04(H) carries the same Chapter 69 penalties as any other park-conduct violation.
