Palm Beach County coastal sea turtle lighting ordinance (PBC Code §17-29) requires shielded, amber LED lighting on beachfront properties from May 1 through October 31 to protect nesting sea turtles.
PBC Code Chapter 17 (Sea Turtle Protection Ordinance) requires properties within line-of-sight of the beach to use turtle-friendly lighting during nesting season May 1 to October 31. Standards: long-wavelength amber LED (590+ nm), fully shielded fixtures, mounted low, no light visible from beach. Interior lights must use blackout curtains or tinted glass facing the beach. Applies to all beachfront properties from Boca Raton north to Jupiter Inlet. PBC Environmental Resources Management (ERM) enforces. FL §161.163 backs local turtle lighting ordinances.
First offense: warning plus 30-day correction. Subsequent: $500 to $1,500 per fixture per night. Knowing violation harming turtles: federal Endangered Species Act penalties up to $25,000 plus criminal charges.
