Newton zoning requires shielded, downward-directed outdoor lighting in all districts. Commercial fixtures must be full cutoff with color temperatures not exceeding 3000K in residential areas.
Newton Zoning Chapter 30 includes outdoor lighting standards to reduce light pollution and protect residential character. All new exterior lighting must be fully shielded (full cutoff) so the light source is not visible from adjacent properties. Color temperature is capped at 3000K (warm white) in residential districts and 4000K in commercial areas. Parking lot fixtures cannot exceed 20 feet in height, and lighting levels cannot exceed 0.1 foot-candle at property lines abutting residential lots. Site plan review is required for any commercial installation over 10 fixtures or 20,000 lumens total. Holiday decorative lighting is exempt November 15 through January 15. Non-conforming existing lighting must be brought into compliance during major renovations.
