Brownsville, TX Parking Rules: Abandoned Vehicles (2026)

Chapter 46, Article IV of the Brownsville Code governs junked and abandoned vehicles. Section 46-146 defines a junked vehicle as one lacking an unexpired license plate or a valid motor vehicle inspection certificate, wrecked or dismantled, or inoperable for 72 consecutive hours on public property or 30 consecutive days on private property. A separate 48-hour standard defines an abandoned motor vehicle. The police chief, environmental services director, public health director, building official, and code enforcement officers each hold authority to enter private property, inspect, cite, and remove. Owners receive at least ten days' certified-mail notice and can demand a municipal court hearing. Vehicles fully enclosed in a building, and antique or special-interest vehicles screened from public view, are exempt.
