The parish tags and tows junked, wrecked, derelict or abandoned vehicles from public and private property. Once tagged, the owner has 72 hours to remove it before it is impounded and sold or destroyed.
Under Jefferson Parish Code Chapter 36, Article V, a vehicle found to be abandoned, junked or derelict, or illegally parked, is tagged by the Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement, which posts a windshield notice directing removal within 72 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) (Sec. 36-131). If not removed, inoperable, junked, derelict or abandoned vehicles are towed and may be destroyed or sold to defray removal costs (Sec. 36-133). Louisiana law defines an abandoned motor vehicle statewide (RS 32:471). The owner may redeem the vehicle before sale by paying towing, storage and penalties (Sec. 36-134).
Owners of unlawfully parked or junked vehicles face penalties under Sec. 36-135 plus all accrued towing and storage fees; unredeemed vehicles are sold or destroyed.
