Under Colorado law, a motor vehicle left unattended on public property outside incorporated town limits for 48 hours or longer is an 'abandoned motor vehicle' and may be towed. Castle Rock also requires vehicles stored on private property to be licensed and operable.
State statute C.R.S. 42-4-1802 defines an abandoned motor vehicle as one left unattended on public property, including any highway right-of-way, outside incorporated town limits for 48 hours or longer (within a town, the local ordinance period controls, defaulting to 48 hours). Once tagged, the vehicle may be impounded and, after appraisal and notice, sold. On private lots, Castle Rock requires that vehicles stored on your property have valid license tags and be in operable condition, so junk or unregistered cars are a code violation.
Abandoned vehicles are towed and impounded; owners pay towing, storage and appraisal costs. Inoperable/unlicensed private-property vehicles are cited as a nuisance under town code.
