Bexar County enforces Texas Transportation Code Chapter 683 on abandoned vehicles. A vehicle left on public property 48+ hours or on private property without consent may be tagged, towed, and sold at auction.
Abandoned vehicle enforcement in unincorporated Bexar County follows Texas Transportation Code Chapter 683. A vehicle is abandoned if it has been left on public property more than 48 hours, left on a street or highway more than 48 hours after being disabled, or left on private property without the owner consent for more than 48 hours. The Bexar County Sheriff or constables may affix a notice tag, and after 10 days without response, the vehicle is towed to a licensed vehicle storage facility. Owners receive written notice with auction dates, and unclaimed vehicles are sold at public auction with proceeds applied to towing and storage fees. Junked vehicles on private property, defined as inoperable, wrecked, dismantled, or more than five years old, are separately regulated under Texas Transportation Code 683.071 as public nuisances and must be enclosed or removed. Property owners can report junked vehicles to Bexar County Environmental Services. Removing license plates and storing an inoperable car inside a garage generally avoids the nuisance classification.
