Shelby, NC Parking Rules: Abandoned Vehicles (2026)

Shelby's Code of Ordinances defines a junked motor vehicle as one lacking a current license plate that is dismantled or wrecked, inoperable, or more than five years old and worth less than $100. Property owners may keep only one such vehicle, and it must sit in the rear yard, entirely hidden from the street and abutting properties by an acceptable covering, or be stored inside an enclosed garage. The city manager can order removal of a junked, abandoned, or nuisance vehicle after finding the aesthetic benefit to the public outweighs the owner's loss, following notice and a right to appeal to city council or request a probable-cause hearing before a magistrate.
