Ames Municipal Code Sec. 18.16 targets heavy vehicles parked on residential streets rather than driveways. No person may park a duly licensed truck or trailer rated over one ton, any vehicle of 20 or more gross tons, or a boat on a street adjacent to property the code classifies as residential. The section carves out two exceptions: trucks or trailers actively delivering or collecting goods, wares, merchandise or materials may park for no longer than is necessary and never more than two hours, and the residential-street ban does not reach vehicles being used on construction sites.

Sec. 18.16(2) goes further than the tonnage rule and bans a detached semi-tractor trailer of any kind from parking on any street anywhere in the City, not just residential streets, with no stated exception for deliveries or construction work. Violations of Sec. 18.16 are charged as parking violations under Sec. 18.7, which lets the Ames Police Department place a notice of violation and fine directly on the vehicle; the general fine for parking violations other than overtime meters and disability spaces is $20.00, cut to $15.00 if paid within the first seven days, with unpaid fines after 30 days deemed contested and subject to prosecution in municipal court.
