Bakersfield Municipal Code Chapter 10.64 prohibits parking commercial vehicles over 6,000 pounds gross weight or over 20 feet long on residential streets for more than a brief loading period. Oil-field service trucks, big rigs, and construction trailers must be stored in commercial or industrial zones or on properly zoned private property.
As a major oil and agricultural hub, Bakersfield sees heavy commercial vehicle traffic, and the city actively regulates where those vehicles can be stored in residential areas. Under BMC Chapter 10.64, no commercial vehicle exceeding 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating or 20 feet in length may be parked or stored on any public street in a residential zone except for the time reasonably necessary to load or unload goods or to provide a service at a specific address β typically interpreted as under 2 hours. Tractor-trailers, oil-field service trucks, water tenders, dump trucks, flatbeds, and construction trailers fall within the definition. Vehicles above 10,000 pounds are further restricted by California Vehicle Code Β§22507.5 when the city posts 'No Parking 2 AM β 6 AM' commercial vehicle signs, which Bakersfield has adopted on many residential streets. On private residential property, commercial vehicles are subject to BMC Title 17 limits as well: one commercial vehicle of up to 10,000 lbs GVWR may generally be parked by a resident operator on the property in a side or rear yard on a paved surface, but larger rigs must be stored on commercially or industrially zoned land. Violations are enforced by Bakersfield PD with fines starting around $100 and escalating on repeat offenses; vehicles can be towed if left in violation. Enforcement is particularly active in neighborhoods adjacent to oil-field operations in the north and southwest parts of town.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Bakersfield code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
