Birmingham's Off-Street Parking ordinance (Zoning Ord. Title 1, Ch. 5, adopted 2024) governs where commercial vehicles and trailers may be stored, requires off-street loading spaces for buildings receiving deliveries, and reserves required loading areas exclusively for loading. Commercial truck size and weight on streets are further controlled by Alabama Code Title 32, Chapter 9.
Commercial-vehicle parking in Birmingham is regulated through the city's Off-Street Parking and Loading ordinance (Birmingham Zoning Ordinance Title 1, Chapter 5, adopted 2024). Storage of commercial vehicles and trailers not used for daily transportation must occur on an approved storage lot (Sec. 7.C.1), and the ordinance requires buildings that receive merchandise or material shipments to provide off-street loading spaces under Table 1.05.201. Required loading spaces, aisles and access driveways must be used exclusively for vehicle loading and unloading - 'No parking space, structure, sign, outdoor storage, sales display, vehicle sales, or any other use other than loading shall be permitted within a required loading area.' Designated parking spaces likewise must be used only for operative motor vehicles. On the road, commercial truck size and weight are governed by Alabama Code Title 32, Chapter 9 (Trucks, Trailers and Semitrailers), and on-street commercial parking is also subject to the 48-hour street limit (City Code Sec. 10-9-12) and the state stopping/standing rules.
Parking, storing or displaying a commercial vehicle outside an approved area, or using a required loading area for anything other than loading, is a zoning violation enforced by Planning, Engineering and Permits and code enforcement. A commercial vehicle left on a public street beyond 48 hours is subject to citation and towing under City Code Sec. 10-9-12. Oversized/overweight vehicles violating Ala. Code Title 32, Ch. 9 face state traffic penalties.
