Full Breakdown
Sonoma County Code Sec. 3(g) authorizes the County to prohibit or restrict the parking or standing of commercial vehicles with a manufacturer's gross weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more on any street, or portion of a street, in a residential district, exercising the authority California Vehicle Code Sec. 5 grants to local agencies. The County's findings note that its commercial-vehicle parking restrictions on County roads date to the 1992 ordinance and were carried forward in the current Chapter 18, Article III. Separately, Sec. 10 limits all 'oversized vehicles' - including large commercial trucks, buses (Vehicle Code Sec.
233), semi-trailers (Sec. 630), and trailer coaches (Sec. 635) and anything at least 24 feet long, 90 inches high, or 96 inches wide - to six consecutive hours on a County road or right-of-way, after which the vehicle must relocate for at least 72 hours. The oversized-vehicle rule contains exemptions for vehicles actively making pickups or deliveries adjacent to the property served, fully permitted food trucks (when not adjacent to residential-zoned property), emergency and government vehicles, vehicles under emergency repair for under 24 hours, and agricultural vehicles supporting commercial farming or ranching. Where a residential-district commercial-vehicle restriction is adopted, it is enforceable only once signs or curb markings give notice.
Violations & Fines
A commercial vehicle parked in violation of a posted residential restriction (Sec. 18-3.3(g)) or beyond the six-hour oversized-vehicle limit (Sec. 18-3.10) may be cited and is subject to removal under the Vehicle Code, plus parking penalties set by Board resolution under Sec. 18-3.6.
