Sonoma County, CA Parking Rules: Commercial Vehicle Restrictions (2026)

Sonoma County does not have a single 'commercial vehicle parking' ordinance for residential properties but addresses the issue through several Code sections. Article 86 (Parking Regulations) of the Zoning Code requires off-street parking for commercial uses on commercially zoned land but does not generally permit habitual parking of large commercial vehicles on residentially zoned parcels as the primary use. Sec. 26-88-110 (Home Occupations) defines what business activities may be conducted from a residence: traffic must not exceed normal residential levels, no employees may work on-site other than residents, no on-site retail customers, and 'storage of commercial vehicles or equipment used in the business of more than one passenger vehicle, light commercial vehicle, or pickup truck' is prohibited unless the use permit is obtained. That language effectively allows a resident contractor to keep one work van or one pickup truck at home, but prohibits storage of multiple dump trucks, a tow-truck fleet, or tractor-trailer rigs on residential parcels. Vehicles parked on a parcel must comply with the front-yard setback rules in Article 88 - long-term commercial-vehicle storage in a front yard generally violates accessory-structure setback principles. Operating a commercial trucking terminal, freight depot, or vehicle-repair yard requires zoning that permits the use, typically M1 (Limited Industrial), M2 (Heavy Industrial), or LIA/LEA/DA agricultural zones with a use permit; in commercial C2 or C3 zones, the use may be allowed with a use permit. On public streets in unincorporated Sonoma County, California Vehicle Code Sec. 22507.5 authorizes local agencies to prohibit, by ordinance, the overnight parking (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) of any commercial vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating exceeding 10,000 pounds on residential streets, provided the streets are signed; Sonoma County has used this authority in select areas. CVC Sec. 21462 (state vehicle code preemption) allows local agencies to prohibit commercial-vehicle parking on specific roads via local ordinance. CVC Sec. 22651(k) (72-hour rule) and Sec. 22669-22671 (abandoned vehicle abatement) also apply. Heavy-vehicle weight restrictions on county roads (typically 5-ton or 10-ton limits posted on specific routes) are enforced by the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office and CHP. Coastal Zone parcels are subject to additional Chapter 26C provisions, and Scenic Resources (SR) combining districts impose visual standards that affect storage of vehicles visible from designated scenic corridors like Highway 1, Highway 12, and the Wine Trail.
