The size trigger is either one and one-half tons of capacity or a bed longer than eight feet, so a single oversized bed can bring in a lighter truck that would otherwise fall under the weight line. The listed examples, tow trucks, dump trucks, flatbeds and semitrailers, are illustrative rather than exhaustive, since the section covers any tractor, trailer or tractor-trailer combination meeting the threshold. Only two exceptions apply: school buses used to transport children to and from school or school-sponsored activities, and any large vehicle used strictly for the owner's personal transportation to and from work.

The same subsection preserves separately regulated parking on designated snow routes during a declared snow emergency and any area controlled by duly authorized signage, so a truck legal under (1)(d) can still be cited under a posted no-parking zone. A related clause, (1)(e), bars parking any motor vehicle of any size on a lot that has no primary building, and requires that parking on an occupied lot stay accessory to that building's use. 557.
